WEEK 5 | LOVE
What is love?
Read and meditate on John 13:1-17
Guiding Questions:
This action is amazing. It shows Jesus’ sacrificial love, his willingness to clean his disciples and to love them. This service was a symbolic preenactment of his greater act of sacrifice on the cross. This showed the sacrificial love he was going to show them on the cross.
Foot washing was common in Jewish cultures as a gesture of hospitality. It was a lowly, menial task reserved for servants. When Jesus began to wash the disciples’ feet, he took the posture of a slave.
This was true love he had for his disciples. The other importance was that this act required an immense amount of humility. In order to love as Jesus loved, it will take humility. You cannot love someone to the point of death and persecution without first thinking of yourself less. With pride, it is impossible to have sacrificial, devotional love.
Questions:
How can you practice loving people?
Where in your life do you see a lack of humility getting in the way of your love for someone?
In what ways can you love better?
