WHAT IS TWELVE?
Twelve is a study that’s meant to give you a year spent with Jesus. It doesn’t have to be completed within a twelve month period, but it can work that way. There are 38 weekly sessions divided into four quarters. Each quarter makes a good onramp for bringing new members into the group and a good offramp for those who need to take a season off. The study works well in one-on-one settings, or it can be done with small groups of up to twelve people.
Each week you will read a passage from one of the Gospels. Each session gives you a passage and a key question to launch your discussion. There is also a written session with additional questions. It’s preferable if everyone reads the material ahead of time, but the material is also written such that you can have a meaningful discussion even if people didn’t get a change to read in advance. You can simply start your session by reading the passage and asking the key question.
LEADERS
Each group needs at least one leader, but depending on the size of the group, having a co-leader is usually preferred. The leaders don’t need to be experts in the material, they simply need to have a desire to grow and to help others grow. You’ll need to keep an eye on the schedule and communicate with the group leaders. You’ll need to facilitate the discussion initially, but as you’ll see, the discussion gets handed increasingly to group members as Twelve progresses.
RECRUITING
You could do this material as a one-on-one study. If so, prayerfully seek out the person you want to guide through it. Twelve also works well with a group of up to twelve members. If you take this approach, we recommend first praying for a co-leader, and then between the two of you, go around tapping shoulders and recruiting participants.
